Federer beats Kyrgios to reach Stuttgart Open final, reclaims No 1 ranking

first_imgRoger Federer defeated Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-6 (5) to book his place in the Stuttgart Open final and reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal on Saturday. The Swiss great will play Milos Raonic as he bids for his 18th grass-court title.Raonic earlier hit 19 aces and saved the only break point he faced as he defeated defending champion Lucas Pouille 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the other semifinal.Federer was pushed all the way by the fourth-seeded Kyrgios, who had 23 aces.”I am very happy and very relieved,” Federer said.”It was close and it could have gone either way naturally but I am happy that I have got it and got back to world No 1 next Monday.”I thought it was the tough match that I expected against Nick.”We had so many tie-breaks already I have lost count.”Last year Federer had crashed out in the opening round after losing a tie-break to Tommy Haas admitted it had crosed his mind during the semi-final.”It has never been easy, even before last match point I though I had lost the last couple of matches here before match point,” Federer added.”I thought maybe it was going to happen again but when I picked up the half-volley I was so happy.”Kyrgios forced a mini-break in the deciding tiebreak, but Federer remained steady and sent a short backhand past the Australian on his first match point to clinch the win.Federer, in his first tournament since March, was trailing Nadal by 100 points at the start of the week and is guaranteed of taking the top spot on Monday regardless of how Sunday’s final goes.advertisementIt will be Raonic’s first final since the 2017 Istanbul Open. Barcelona upset with Pique over role in Griezmann’s Atletico extension film

We want players who are committed to Barca and who want to succeed here.”But we regret that the club’s members were disillusioned by the way things were conducted and the broadcasting of the final decision,” he added.”We’re are going to speak with Pique internally and we won’t make any more comments in public about this.”Questions about Griezmann peppered the presentation of Abidal, who will be tasked with buying and selling players for next season to help Barca’s bid to defend the Liga title and improve on their recent failure to win the Champions League.FIFA World Cup: Gerard Pique and Shakira’s Barcelona house robbedadvertisement”I think the decision is his, I don’t want to get into a debate, there were two options, yes or now, but the important thing is what the club think and we’re not here to talk about a player, but to build a good team,” said Abidal on Griezmann rejecting Barca.Abidal was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2011 while playing for Barca but overcame the disease and lifted the Champions League trophy that year after they beat Manchester United in the final.last_img read more

Aaron Finch smashes T20 records, Australia beat Zimbabwe by 100 runs

first_imgAustralia captain Aaron Finch led from the front and struck a world T20 record 172 off just 76 deliveries to help his team thrash Zimbabwe by 100 tuns in the T20I tri-series on Tuesday.Finch’s score was record for the highest individual score in T20 international cricket, bettering the previous best of 156 which he himself had set five years ago against England in Southampton.Finch struck 10 sixes and 16 boundaries to power Australia to 229/2 in 20 overs. Along with the individual score, he was part of a record-breaking 223-run first-wicket stand with D’Arcy Short, who made 46.The previous best was the 171-run unbroken stand between New Zealand’s Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson against Pakistan in Hamilton more than two years ago.Zimbabwe struggled for the second straight match and were restricted to 129/9. Andrew Tye took 3/12 and Ashton Agar picked up 2/16.”Yeah, it was nice to get a few in the middle, and break the record. Could’ve started better with the ball, so I thought we could’ve been more polished in the field.”I thought using the spinners was the right move on the surface. They don’t happen very often, so very pleased with it,” man-of-the-match Finch said at the post-match presentation.Finch tore into the Zimbabwe bowling attack on Tuesday with all of the bowlers conceding over 9 runs per over except for Tendai Chisoro, who managed to give away just 19 runs from his four overs.Blessing Muzarabani was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as he managed to dismiss Short and Finch in the final over of the innings.advertisementAustralia, who crushed Pakistan in their first game on Monday, top the table with 4 points followed by Pakistan and Zimbabwe.(With AP inputs)last_img read more

Turkey press rages over ‘stab in back’ after Germany handed Euro 2024

first_imgIstanbul, Sept 28 (AFP) Turkey’s newspapers on Friday blasted the decision of UEFA to award the Euro 2024 football tournament to Germany over a rival Turkish bid, saying it had been “stabbed in the back” and taking particular aim at UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. The handing of the tournament to Germany came as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the country for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel aiming to mend battered ties. The leadership in Turkey has, so far, been relatively tight-lipped over Thursday’s decision by UEFA, with only Sports Minister Muharrem Kasapoglu emerging to say that the country had “lost nothing”.But the papers were universally scathing over the disappointment, the fourth time that Turkey has lost out on the right to host the Euro.”It’s not just. UEFA gave its support to racism,” said the Yeni Safak daily, a strong supporter of Erdogan. It referred to the scandal that broke out when Turkish-origin German player Mesut Ozil quit national team duty in the wake of the World Cup in a row over alleged racism in Germany’s football federation after he met the Turkish president.”UEFA was expected to make a stance against racism and discrimination but did the exact opposite and gave the event to Germany which has been under the shadow of racism,” the paper said.”Nothing changes in Europe’s head,” sighed the Turkiye daily. “Turkey experienced disappointment for the fourth time.” “We did not lose. Europe lost,” said Takvim. Sports daily Fotomac described the voting as a “dirty game”.advertisementAn evaluation report by Uefa, in the build up to the Euro announcement, had stated several positive active aspects to Turkey’s bid but also that it had risks, including the lack of an action plan in the area of human rights.- ‘Lost in one night’ -=======================Turkey’s disappointment also comes after Istanbul in 2013 lost out to Tokyo on hosting the 2020 Olympics. Turkey is now turning its attention to a bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics in its northeastern city of Erzurum.Press owned by the Demiroren Group, which is chaired by Yildirim Demiroren, who is also the president of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), lashed out at UEFA chief Ceferin.”He stabbed us in the back,” said Milliyet, one of the flagship titles of the Demiroren Media Group.”We lost it in one night,” said Hurriyet, also owned by Demiroren, accusing Ceferin of swaying committee members on Wednesday night so that a 9-7 advantage for Turkey turned into a 4-12 loss.”It was a Germany operation from Ceferin,” said Fanatik, the sports daily of the Demiroren Group.”After the decision, the very surprised TFF delegation showed its response to Ceferin,” the paper added, without giving details. The Demiroren family earlier this year took over key titles like Hurriyet and Fanatik from another family industrial holding, the Dogan Group, in what commentators saw as a further narrowing of freedom of expression in Turkey.Yildirim Demiroren, a staunch supporter of Erdogan, has led the TFF since 2012. Every rupee spent should benefit the needy: PM

first_imgNew Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) Every purchase people make should benefit those who have made efforts and skills to produce it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sunday, noting that inclusive growth would be a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary. He also thanked people from all walks of life for participating in ‘Swachhta hi Sewa’ campaign which began on September 15 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi. He said Swachh Bharat Mission or Clean India Mission has become a success story not only in India but in the entire world. “This time India is hosting the biggest sanitation convention of the world so far, the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention. Sanitation ministers from countries across the world and experts on the subject of sanitation will converge and share their experiments and experiences,” he said in his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio address. The convention will conclude on October 2. Referring to Gandhi’s mantra, he said, “Can we remember Bapu for a moment while going out for shopping? … Can we spare a thought while purchasing anything as to who in my country will benefit by this purchase! Whose face will sport a smile! Who will be the fortunate one to get a direct or indirect benefit from your purchase! I will feel much happier if my purchase will benefit the poorest of the poor,” he said. The PM said if money spent by people on buying goods helps those who have made it and put in their skill and money, it would be a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.advertisement He also recalled the contribution of then prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri who shares his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi. “Shastriji had a unique quality … he was very humble outwardly but he was rock solid from inside. His slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan is the hallmark of his grand personality. It was the result of his selfless service to the nation that in a brief tenure of about one and a half years he gave to our jawans and farmers the mantra to reach the pinnacle of success,” Modi said. No Ronaldo, No Messi as Real Madrid face Barcelona in El Clasico: Why watch it?

first_imgFor the first time since 2007, arguably the biggest game in club football will not feature either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. With the former injured and the latter departed to Juventus, both Barcelona and Real Madrid will need new heroes to emerge when they meet in El Clasico on Sunday. Here are the key battles that could determine the outcome of the fixture:Sergio Ramos v Luis SuarezArguably Spanish football’s two most famous pantomime villains, Ramos and Suarez are players whom opposition fans love to hate and there are habitual fireworks when they come up against each other. In the absence of Messi, Uruguayan forward Suarez will be tasked with providing the finishing touch that his teammate usually does. He has just one goal in his last eight outings for the Catalan side and will need to find his shooting boots if they are to prevail this time. Central defender Ramos, heartbeat of this Real team, will be tasked with stopping him. The Real captain, who has taken over penalty duties in the wake of Ronaldo’s departure, has endured a mixed start to the season, scoring six goals for club and country while committing a number of high-profile errors that have lead to goals.Real are without a win in La Liga since Sept. 22 and if they are to get back to winning ways, the 32-year-old must shackle Suarez while not adding to his record of being sent off five times against the Catalans over the years.Gerard Pique v Karim BenzemaadvertisementAt the other end of the pitch there is a strikingly similar matchup. With Ronaldo gone, French forward Benzema can finally play as a central striker, but has thus far fired mainly blanks. His early header in the 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen at the weekend was his first goal since Sept. 1 and his form has been much maligned as Real went eight hours and one minute without scoring earlier this season. Pique, who, if Ramos is Mr Real Madrid, is Mr Barcelona, has also made a number of errors that have resulted in his team making a sketchy start to the season.Without the threat of Ronaldo to deal with, the Spaniard will come up against a Benzema determined to make his mark.Marc-Andre ter Stegen v Thibaut CourtoisWith their stalwart central defenders enduring patchy form it is perhaps no surprise that both of these goalkeepers have been busy throughout the opening weeks of the season.German Ter Stegen has, aside from Messi, arguably been Barca’s standout performer, which gives an indication of how overworked he has been. He has conceded 11 times in nine games thus far, giving the Camp Nou side only the joint-tenth best defensive record in La Liga this season. Courtois, meanwhile, was brought in by Real’s club president Florentino Perez to much fanfare this summer after excelling at the World Cup. While the Belgian has shipped fewer goals (nine), there remain some sections of the fanbase who feel deputy Keylor Navas should be number one.Expect both keepers to be busy and it is possible that whoever has the better game will carry his team to victory.Philippe Coutinho v Gareth BaleWithout Messi and Ronaldo, eyes will be on Barca and Real’s club record transfers to make their mark.Coutinho, who arrived for 142 million pounds in January, took time to adapt to Barca’s set up, but is now a key cog in their midfield. He will be tasked with unlocking the visiting defence with a killer ball, while also fancying his chances from set-pieces given the Argentinean, who usually has a monopoly on free kicks, will be absent. In the capital, Bale has yet to show he is the man to fill the Ronaldo void and provide moments of brilliance when his team need it most. There is no doubting the Welshman’s quality – he scored a wonderful equalising goal in this fixture last season – but niggling injuries have blighted his past couple of years in Madrid and fans have grown frustrated with his absences. There would be no better way to convince the Bernabeu faithful he can be their main man with a match-winning performance on Sunday.last_img read more

Lewis Hamilton wins fifth F1 title with 4th-place finish in Mexican GP

first_imgLewis Hamilton on Sunday became only the third man in the Formula One history to win five drivers’ titles.Hamilton finished fourth in the Mexican Grand Prix, which was won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for the second year in a row, to clinch his 5th title. The Mercedes driver, who equalled the five titles of late 1950s Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio with only seven-time champion Michael Schumacher above them, finished fourth while Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel was second.Hamilton had needed only five points to be sure of the title while four-time champion Vettel had to win to have any hope of denying the Briton.”It’s something I dreamed of, but I never in a million years thought I’d be stood here as a five-time champion,” the 33-year-old told Sky Sports television.”I’m so grateful for everyone who helped me be here, to raise the bar and lift the cup.”It wasn’t won here, just throughout the season and a lot of hard work,” added the 33-year-old after doing smoking ‘donuts’ in front of a 130,000-strong crowd who witnessed a rare race without a Mercedes driver standing on the podium.”To complete this when Fangio did it with Mercedes is an incredible feeling and very surreal.”A day to remember! #HiFive pic.twitter.com/pBwoxUy0IDMercedes-AMG F1 (@MercedesAMGF1) October 29, 2018Team boss Toto Wolff hailed Hamilton as a well-deserved champion.”He has really been the dominant driver this year,” said the Austrian.Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was third, meaning the constructors’ championship remained open at least until the Brazilian Grand Prix in two weeks’ time with Mercedes’ lead trimmed.advertisementSPORTING GESTUREIn a nice sporting gesture, Hamilton hugged Vettel and then ran back to the Mercedes garage to embrace his teammates one by one.”I think he drove superbly all year and was the better one of us two,” said the German, whose season unravelled after the August break. “I told him ‘well deserved’ and to enjoy it. Number five I think is something incredible.”I asked him to keep pushing for next year. I need him at his best to fight him again.” In a nice sporting gesture, Hamilton hugged Vettel after the race (AP Photo)Australian Daniel Ricciardo, Verstappen’s team mate, retired from the race with a smoking engine after starting from pole position.Team principal Christian Horner described that eighth retirement in 19 races as “absolutely gutting’, with Red Bull fretting about whether he would make it to the finish. “It was a shame to lose Daniel,” said Verstappen, who had been angry on Saturday after missing out on pole. “I think we could have had a one-two or at least two cars on the podium.”The Dutch driver seized the lead at the start, with Hamilton also making a quick getaway to slot in behind with Ricciardo dropping to third. When it starts to sink in that you’re a five-time @F1 World Champion… pic.twitter.com/k5jkOb8Ue8Mercedes-AMG F1 (@MercedesAMGF1) October 29, 2018But in a high-altitude race of attrition, with tyre wear playing a huge part in the outcome, the champion was unable to match the pace and had no need to take any risks either.”There’s nothing left guys, these tyres are dead,” Hamilton said after running off the track on lap 47. His Finnish team mate Valtteri Bottas finished fifth but lapped by Verstappen. As he crossed the line to take the title in Mexico for the second year in a row, Hamilton heard a message from Hollywood actor Will Smith come over the radio: “That’s how you do it, just like that. Request local authorities to intervene to ensure safety of players & staff.Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) December 14, 2018Gokulam, however, had a response to that as well.Yes. Due to hartal, we had difficulty in arranging transport to Medical College Ground on time. The training time was at 10 am and the bus reached at the hotel at 10.06 AM.But instead of waiting for the bus, the whole Real Kashmir team barged in to the stadium and started to make a melee. The strike and the difficulty to get transport were informed to them and the AIFF officially on Wednesday itself.advertisementHowever, the players and officials barged into the stadium, hurling abuses. When our CEO requested them to leave the stadium, they manhandled our CEO and Kozhikode District Football Association official Hammeed. They snatched Hameed’s mobile phone and threw it on ground, thereby destroying it.They went on to train at the ground. During training they intentionally destroyed two Hero I-League runner boards. The runner boards were destroyed intentionally by kicking the boards on the sidelines during the training. Picture taken after the RKFC team left the stadium.Gokulam Kerala FC has been a good host to all the travelling teams. No teams were allowed to train at the field of play match day minus one. The home team also trains at the same venue of the away team.We have arranged training ground at Medical College ground, which is one of the best football pitches available in Kozhikode for the away teams to train. We have paid for the ground and no other I-League team does the same to the traveling team.Several teams including Minerva Punjab CEO Ranjit Bajaj has personally appreciated our hospitality when their team traveled to Kozhikode.Despite instigating violence and abusing Gokulam Kerala FC officials, they have spread blatant lies on social media. Police have taken a statement of the events occurred at the stadium. The match commissioner was also present at the stadium.Instead of behaving like professionals, Real Kashmir FC officials behaved like a set of hooligans. We have officially complained to the AIFF about the misconduct of the Real Kashmir officials.Gokulam Kerala FC will continue to be good hosts for all the visiting teams and use everything at its disposal to give the best facilities to the opponent teams. A single unfortunate situation caused by one sporting entity will not change our values. Gokulam Kerala FC requests all the concerned people to end this chapter here and let the real battle be fought on the pitch. Also Read | I was dejected when we missed the last edition of AFC Asian Cup: Sunil ChhetriAlso Read | Minerva and Chennayin may play AFC games in AhmedabadAlso See:last_img read more

Afridi reacts to Gambhir’s psychiatrist comment, says he has mental problem

first_imgNot known to pull back punches, Gautam Gambhir hit back at Shahid Afridi, offering to take him for a session with “a psychiatrist” after the former Pakistan captain wrote a few uncharitable things about the Indian opener.Afridi, in his just-released autobiography ‘Game Changer’, sarcastically referred to Gambhir as someone who “behaves like a cross between Don Bradman and James Bond,” and has a “lot of attitude and no great records”.Gambhir responded through his official twitter handle, tagging Afridi.”…you are a hilarious man!!! Anyway, we are still granting visas to Pakistanis for medical tourism. I will personally take you to a psychiatrist,” Gambhir tweeted.Afridi was ready with his retort during the official launch of the book here.”He (Gambhir) has a mental problem and if he wants I can get him treated at my hospital,” Afridi said in response to the Indian batsman’s tweet.”If he faces any visa problem I will get it processed quickly for him,” Afridi said. The duo never shared a great rapport on and off the field and it was reflected in Afridi’s take on Gambhir in the book.”Some rivalries were personal, some professional. First the curious case of Gambhir. Oh poor Gautam. He & his attitude problem. He who has no personality. He who is barely a character in the great scheme of cricket. He who has no great records just a lot of attitude,” Afridi wrote.”Gambhir behaves like he’s a cross between Don Bradman & James Bond. In Karachi, we call guys like him saryal (grumpy). It’s simple, I like happy, positive people. Doesn’t matter if they are aggressive or competitive, but you have to be positive & Gambhir wasn’t,” he further wrote.advertisementThe two had an angry bust up during a bilateral series ODI in Kanpur back in 2007 (wrongly referred in Afridi’s book as Asia Cup game).”I remember the run-in with Gambhir during the 2007 Asia Cup, when he completed his single while running straight into me. The umpires had to finish it off or I would have. Clearly we had a frank bilateral discussion about each other’s female relatives,” Afridi recalled the uncharitable verbal exchange.Afridi has recently agreed that he had indulged in age-fraud and was 21 years old when he scored his hundred debut and not 16 as it was believed for a lot of years. Also Read | Will personally take you to a psychiatrist: Gautam Gambhir hits back at Shahid AfridiAlso Read | Umpires had to finish it off or I would have: Afridi recalls run-in with GambhirAlso Seelast_img read more

MS Dhoni gloves row: ICC unlikely to change its stance

first_imgThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reconsider its objection to MS Dhoni donning the army crest on his wicketkeeping gloves but according to ICC sources, there is no scope for appeal.MS Dhoni is understood to be adamant on keeping the army badge on his wicketkeeping gloves despite objection by the International Cricket Council. BCCI Committee of Administrators chief Vinod Rai said the Indian board has written to the ICC to let Dhoni wear his gloves. In fact, senior ICC sources said there was no way the world governing body would reconsider because that might set a precedent for other teams and the ICC will have to allow their requests too.ICC sources said if Dhoni was allowed to sport the army insignia, then the whole playing field will have religious messaging or political messaging going on which the ICC can never afford to allow. However, the sources also clarified that BCCI has not yet made any formal appeal on this issue.MS Dhoni was seen wearing the wicketkeeping gloves with the Balidan badge during India’s World Cup 2019 opening match against South Africa on June 5. India next play Australia on June 9 and a decision needs to be made before that. However ICC sources said according to regulations, there is no scope for appeal but the BCCI is well within its rights to write to the ICC. At best, the matter will be referred to the technical committee comprising Jeff Allardyce, David Richardson, Kumar Sangakkara, Harsha Bhogle and Steve Elworthy but it is extremely unlikely that they will change their stance.advertisementAccording to sources, if MS Dhoni still wears the gloves with the army insignia on it, umpires will take note of it and at the moment there is no penalty of ban. The matter will however be escalated. This is the Para Special Forces insignia. Sources say what is seen on Dhoni’s gloves only resembles it, can’t say it’s the the real one. The special forces insignia is always in moron background and has balidan written in Devanagiri script. The badge always worn on the chest pic.twitter.com/ZR2GXO3XTNAbhishek Bhalla (@AbhishekBhalla7) June 7, 2019After the ICC issed a statement and a Pakistan minister took a dig at Dhoni, fans in India were left fuming. On Thursday, BCCI wrote a letter to ICC and asked the world governing body to reconsider its decision.Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Indian government will also intervene if the need arises. “Government doesn’t intervene in affairs of sports bodies, they are autonomous. But when issue is related to country’s sentiments, then interest of the nation has to be kept in mind. I would like to request BCCI to take up the matter with ICC.Also Read | MS Dhoni wanted to honour the Army, says former coach on Balidaan badge rowAlso See:last_img read more
