first_imgMicheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig has said that the tourist potential of Errigal and Dunlewey is not being realised due to neglect by the authorities. The newly elected Independent Councillor says he will be looking to the Council to draw up and implement a plan for the area.Mac Giolla Easbuig told Donegal Daily, “Errigal and the Poisoned Glen at Dunlewey are awe-inspiring sights. “They provide some of the most scenic views visitors will ever come across, particularly earlier in the week when we had fine sunny weather and the lake looked magnificent.“But what do we offer to visitors? The viewing area is used as a dumping ground or, more charitably storage space, for rubble and stones by the Council.“What should be one of the jewels in the crown for tourism in our county is sadly neglected and at times difficult to access.Mac Giolla Easbuig added, “We have a small car park for people walking up Errigal, but as busy times in the summer it cannot cope, so cars and buses end up parked along the main road. “We offer no facilities for the many walkers who flock to our iconic mountain trek.“I will be looking for the Council to draw up a plan for the area to provide seating, viewing areas and toilets along with adequate and safe parking.Mac Giolla Easbuig concluded, “I believe we can provide these facilities in a sensitive way which does not spoil the unique and rugged beauty of the landscape.“With Glenveagh only a short distance away, better facilities around Errigal and Dunlewey could easily attract visitors the few miles further west.“There would then be the potential to draw them to explore further into the west of the county.
