Q2’s rate was not statistically different from Q1 2019’s rate of 1.4%, the Bureau notes. Additionally, homeownership rates remained at a relatively unchanged rate of 64.1%.Meanwhile, rental vacancy rates were 6.8% in Q2 2019. The Bureau notes that this rate is virtually unchanged year-over-year, and not statistically different from Q1 2019’s rate. Approximately 87.8% of the housing units in the United States in the Q2 2019 were occupied and 12.2% were vacant.  Vacant units that were held off market comprised 5.5% of the total housing stock, and 1.6% were for occasional use, 1.0% were temporarily occupied by persons with usual residence elsewhere and 3.0% were vacant for a variety of other reasons. Some cities are combating these vacant, temporarily occupied homes through “empty homes penalties.” Voters in Oakland, California recently approved Measure W, a tax of as much as $6,000 per parcel and $3,000 per condo unit on properties occupied fewer than 50 days per year. The tax is expected to bring in around $10 million per year, which is intended to go toward homeless services and new affordable housing, Capital and Main reports. Additionally, San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin wants to put a vacancy tax on the March 2020 election ballot, with a focus on empty storefront. Meanwhile, vacancy tax pushes in Los Angeles focus more on residential properties. Proponents of these vacancy taxes say that they will improve access to affordable housing by keeping speculators from sitting on them until they can rent them for a higher rate, or sell them at a greater profit when prices inevitably increase. Opponents say that the key to affordable housing isn’t taxes, but the revising of zoning to build more housing.  Demand Propels Home Prices Upward 2 days ago Demand Propels Home Prices Upward 2 days ago The Week Ahead: Nearing the Forbearance Exit 2 days ago Governmental Measures Target Expanded Access to Affordable Housing 2 days ago The Best Markets For Residential Property Investors 2 days ago Data Provider Black Knight to Acquire Top of Mind 2 days ago Previous: Is a Recession on the Way? Reports: NBA could return by July at Disney World in Orlando

first_imgFor a number of weeks, the NBA has seemed determined to find a track to resume the 2019-20 season – and multiple media reports indicate that plan is finally starting to take shape. The Athletic reported Wednesday morning that the NBA hopes to play games again as soon as mid-July, with Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando emerging as a favored location. If games resume, it is widely expected that they will be played without fans present. While numerous cities have been rumored to be considered hosting games, including Houston and Las Vegas, The Athletic reported Disney World’s viability is tied to its private ownership, with property including the Wide World of Sports Complex with multiple basketball courts. Hotels and other resources could create a “campus-like” bubble  the NBA has been seeking to resume the season on hiatus since March 11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Even though coronavirus cases have soared to more than 1.5 million in the United States and been attributed to more than 93,000 deaths, pro sports leagues have been scouring to see what options are available to resume play. Prominent NBA voices, including the Lakers’ LeBron James, have come out in support of resuming the season and recouping millions (perhaps billions) of lost revenue from the hiatus. Both the Lakers and the Clippers have begun individual workouts at their respective team facilities under strict sanitizing and distancing guidelines. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img The challenges of opening up competition in the NBA’s regular markets and arenas are complex and vast. Individual states and municipalities have varying guidelines for what businesses and services can operate – sports with fans are generally seen as one of the last public events that will be permitted on the road to normalcy. While Gov. Gavin Newsom indicated earlier this week that pro sports without fans could start making a comeback as soon as next month, California has been one of the more cautious states about lifting quarantine restrictions. The suggestion of Disney World as a “bubble” site for the NBA first arose in April: Disney is the parent company of ESPN, one of the NBA’s largest media partners. Disney CEO Bob Iger has spoken to league owners during meetings during the hiatus. The league formerly hosted Summer League events in Orlando for roughly 15 years. The Wide World of Sports Complex has about 12 courts and access to broadcasting facilities. The partnership could be just as vital to Disney, which has struggled through the closure of many of its parks and could use the appeal of basketball programming for ESPN and ABC. It opened a small section of Disney World Springs in Orlando on Wednesday with temperature checks for incoming park-goers.Testing could be one of the biggest barriers to a return: Adam Silver expressed on a call with players earlier this month that the league wanted to make sure it would not siphon tests from essential personnel and medical providers to make them available for NBA players and staff.ESPN also reported on Wednesday that NBA owners anticipated NBA commissioner Adam Silver would greenlight a return to competition sometime next month, with games expected to begin by mid-July. By June 1, many teams expect the NBA to issue guidelines to bring back players who are living outside their team markets and expand workouts at team facilities.last_img read more

Redskins coach Jay Gruden says team ‘discussed’ Kaepernick

first_imgWASHINGTON (AP) — The possibility of bringing in Colin Kaepernick for a tryout was “discussed” by the quarterback-needy Washington Redskins, according to coach Jay Gruden, who said Tuesday the team made a “strictly football” decision to look elsewhere.“Isn’t it obvious what the real reason is?” Kaepernick’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, wrote in an email to The Associated Press.Kaepernick, who led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, hasn’t played since the 2016 season, when he began kneeling during the national anthem as a way to protest police brutality and social and racial injustice. He filed a grievance against the NFL last year, saying team owners colluded to keep him off rosters.Gruden told reporters during a conference call that there would have been “a greater possibility” of considering Kaepernick for a roster spot if the Redskins were in need of a QB in Week 1 rather than at this stage of the season.“Not a lot of time to really get a brand new quarterback and new system installed and taught in a couple of days of practice,” Gruden said. “So he’s been talked about and discussed, but we’ll probably go a different direction.”Added Gruden: “You want to have somebody with a similar skillset to the quarterback you have. Not that Colin can’t do some of the things that I’m talking about, but somebody with a little bit of familiarity.”Washington quarterback Colt McCoy had surgery Tuesday after fracturing his right fibula in a 28-13 loss at the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. McCoy had replaced Alex Smith as the starting quarterback after Smith broke his right leg in a game last month and was ruled out for the season.Gruden said McCoy would not go on injured reserve immediately because there is a slight chance he might be able to return to action by Week 17.Now the Redskins will turn to Mark Sanchez, who starts at QB next Sunday for the Redskins (6-6) against the visiting New York Giants (4-8).Against the Eagles, the 32-year-old Sanchez compiled a passer rating of 53.7, going 13 for 21 for only 100 yards with one interception and one fumble that he managed to recover.“For me to go in and play was in an emergency situation and those things happen. Now it goes from contingency plan to game plan,” Sanchez said. “Listen, I’ve seen just about everything in this league except for, I don’t know, a Super Bowl game.”He hasn’t started a regular-season NFL game since going 0-2 in the 2015 season.Sanchez’s career passer rating is 73.7, and he has more interceptions (87) than TD passes (86) since entering the league as a first-round draft pick of the New York Jets.Gruden said the Redskins would be bringing in a couple of unemployed quarterbacks for workouts later Tuesday and then would decide among them and those street free agents that tried out last month when Sanchez was signed. That group included Kellen Clemens, T.J. Yates, EJ Manuel and Josh Johnson.Notes: Already missing two starting guards, the Redskins lost two more against Philadelphia. Jonathan Cooper tore a biceps tendon and needs season-ending surgery; Tony Bergstrom will miss at least two games with a high ankle sprain. … LB Ryan Anderson will likely miss at least a week with a strained hamstring.___Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich___https://apnews.com/NFL and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL Philadelphia Eagles’ Doug Pederson, left, and Washington Redskins’ Jay Gruden meet after an NFL football game, Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, in Philadelphia.
